#### **** ----------------------------------------- **** #### PRORIB2001 **** ---------------------------------------------------- **** It is our great pleasure to inform you that Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC) and Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP), Calcutta, India, two premier institutes engaged in accelerator based nuclear physics research, and The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), Japan, a leading international laboratory pursuing one of the most ambitious RIB project (the RI Beam Factory), have decided to jointly organise an International Workshop on Production of Radioactive Ion Beams (PRORIB 2001) during February 12-17, 2001 near Calcutta, INDIA. The Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre has undertaken a project to develop an ISOL-Post-Accelerator type of RIB facility which will use the light ions from the existing K=130 Variable Energy Cyclotron for the production of radioactive nuclides. In phase-1 (end of the year 2002) RI beams upto about 500 keV/u will be accelerated. Subsequently in phase-2 the energy will be upgraded to about 4 MeV/u. The RIB project is being pursued in collaboration with SINP, Calcutta and RIKEN, Japan, and is progressing as per the schedule. It was felt that it would be timely to organise an international workshop in early 2001 with the aim to bring together the international experts in this field to exchange ideas on various aspects of RIB development, detector systems and the utilization of RI Beams in basic and applied research.
