Fission studies of short-lived neutron-deficient actinides by use of secondary beams with an advanced experimental set up (S104)

The secondary beam, prepared at the fragment separator of GSI, is guided to Cave B. The fission products are analysed in atomic number Z and mass number A by determining the energy loss in an ionisation chamber, by measuring the magnetic deflection in a magnetic dipole field and by deducing the velocity in a Cerenkov detector. In addition, the gamma radiation from the fission process is recorded by a cylindrical gamma detector which surrounds the target and the neutrons emitted by the fissioning system and by the excited fragments are measured by a neutron wall.

The new experiment, realised in a large collaboration with highly developed experimental equipment,  aims towards a kinematically complete experiment which carries stringent information about the fission process.
