Technical information

I. The GSI mass storage system

A. Copying a full tape of list-mode data from DLT tape to the tape robot
(Here is the example of a session on the LINUX machine in the terminal room of the computing centre. Type the commands exactly as listed below, with all characters and blanks on the same place.)

  1. Login on the LINUX machine lxm000 next to the DLT tape drives in the terminal room of the computing centre. Make sure that the account you use has the right to write directly from DLT to your archive on the tape robot. (E.g. the account S184 is authorized to write on the archive S184.)

  2. Insert the DLT tape into the appropriate tape drive. (Note that there are different tape drives for different generations of DLT types.)
(The tape drives /dev/st0, /dev/st1 and /dev/st2 are connected to lxm000.)

  3. Type: gstore
ADSMCLI answers with its command prompt.

  4. Type: arch "/dev/st1:*" S184 /RUN107
(Again the tape unit "/dev/st1" is given as an example.
     "*" stands for "all files".
"S184" is an example for the archive name.
"/RUN107" is an example for the path name, specifying the run.)
With this command, all files of the DLT tape are copied to the tape archive.

  5. Type: exit
    You leave
    gstore

  6. Remove the DLT tape from the tape unit.

B. Scan the tape (useful when there are problems reading the tape)

  1. After loading the tape at the tape unit, enter the following command:
    tscan /dev/st1 >ptest
The tape is scanned, and the output is written to the file ptest.

C. Query files in the tape robot (get file information)

  1. Login on a LINUX machine.

  2. Type: gstore query, answer the following questions or specify the other parameters of the command (archive, path, files ...).

D. Transfer files from the tape robot to your machine

  1. Login on a LINUX machine at which you are authorized to write on the local disk. (Direct access to the tape robot is possible from LINUX, AIX and VMS machines.)

  2. Type: gstore retrieve {file} {archive} {path}
For example: gstore retrieve * S184 RUN64 will copy all files of archive S184 and path RUN64 from the tape robot to the local disk (e.g. to lxg0020/data.local/shared/f001.lmd etc.).

  3. Use FTP to transport the data on other platforms.
    E. g. start FTP on a WINDOWS/NT machine. Connect to the LINUX machine, on which the list-mode data and transfer the data to a local disk (e.g. from lxg0020/data.local/shared/f001.lmd etc.).

Help information how to use the gstore command can be viewed by typing man gstore in LINUX or on the following web page: http://www-linux/cgi-bin/man2html?gstore. General information on the mass storage (tape robot) is found on this WEB page: http://www-aix.gsi.de/computing/expdv/gstore.html.
